South Africa

Gavin Weale is an award-winning social entrepreneur based in Johannesburg.

I founded Digify Africa, a social enterprise that supports young people in creating their own sustainable livelihoods and social change through digital skills. The company recently rebranded from Livity Africa. Digify Africa (digifyafrica.com) is a youth-led network for the next generation of digital talent in Africa, which has trained over 85,000 young people in critical digital skills and won an IAB Bookmarks award in South Africa for the Best Contribution to Transformation in digital.

I am also the publisher of Live Magazine SA - (livemag.co.za) an online youth magazine created for young people, by young people in South Africa. I am also the founder of Project Demo - (projectdemo.org.za) an open platform for young activists to make noise about their issues and influence decision-makers. As a journalist and copywriter I have been responsible for numerous campaigns, content, internships, events and activations created lovingly for a diverse range of clients and partners that include, Facebook, Google, Red Bull, the British Council, the Omidyar Network, the Rockefeller Foundation, Girl Effect Mobile, Mr Price, eNCA, and many more.

In 2010 I won the UK Young Publishing Entrepreneur Award for my work on Live Magazine UK, which brought him to South Africa. In early 2011, I was awarded a prestigious Shuttleworth Foundation Fellowship and moved to South Africa.
