Steps to Sustainability: Celebrating 3 Years of Success

‘Steps to Sustainability: Building a Sustainable Heritage Sector’ was designed and delivered by the Social Enterprise Academy to support organisations to look outwards, build stronger partnerships and become more comfortable with the commercial aspects of running a heritage organisation. The Steps to Sustainability programme was delivered throughout 2021-23 with 90 small to medium sized heritage organisations and 165 individuals across the United Kingdom taking part in the full programme over three rounds of delivery, culminating in two events which brought the participants together in person.

Steps to Sustainability supported live project development through strengthening leadership skills and entrepreneurial thinking. The programme enabled participants to use their enterprising idea as the project thread throughout their programme journey. The programme components were designed to support participants to be in a stronger position to unlock £10,000 funding to deliver their project.

These pages showcase the impact of this programme and provide a snapshot of some of the heritage organisations and the diverse range of income-generating ideas that were tried and tested.
